GTA 6 Preload: Date, File Size and the Creator Checklist

The GTA 6 preload opens on November 12, 2026 — seven days before the game releases on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19. That date is confirmed by Rockstar, and it is close to the only thing about the download that is: there is still no official install size, and the hour-by-hour unlock timetable going around is pulled from store listings, not from an announcement.

Below is what is actually confirmed, which numbers are invented, and — if you run a channel — what has to be finished before that download starts. Preload day, not launch day, is the real deadline.

What Rockstar has confirmed about the GTA 6 preload

Separating the announcement from the aggregation matters here, because a lot of “GTA 6 file size confirmed” headlines are built on nothing. This is the honest split:

DetailStatusWhat it actually says
Release dateConfirmed by RockstarNovember 19, 2026 — PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only
Preload startConfirmed by RockstarNovember 12, 2026, for digital pre-orders. No clock time given
Early accessConfirmedNone. No edition, including Ultimate, unlocks the game sooner
Physical copyReported as confirmedThe boxed edition holds a download code, not a disc
Install sizeNot announcedNo storage figure on the PlayStation listing; a placeholder on Xbox
Unlock timetableNot announcedCirculating times come from PlayStation Store availability data

One practical note buried in that table: preloading is not early access. The download finishing on November 13 does not let you play on November 13. If your upload plan assumes a head start, rebuild it — our GTA 6 launch week upload plan sets the realistic day-by-day order.

GTA 6 file size: why nobody has a real number yet

Rockstar has published no install or download size for GTA 6. The PlayStation Store page carries no storage section at all, and the Xbox listing shows a roughly 328.8 MB placeholder — the stub a store page gets before the real package is attached.

So every figure you have seen is either a comparison or a fabrication. Here are the comparisons worth using:

TitlePS5Xbox Series X|S
GTA V Enhanced~86.8 GB~94.2 GB
Red Dead Redemption 2105 GB listed minimum105 GB listed minimum
GTA 6Not announcedNot announced

Reasonable estimates put GTA 6 above Red Dead Redemption 2 — roughly 120–130 GB and up — but that is an estimate, not a spec. The figures you should ignore outright: 676.7 GB, 750 GB, a 113 GB ISO, and the “150 to 200 GB” range. Those are unsourced, debunked, or lifted from fake store screenshots.

What you can plan around is your own free space, which is a real number:

  • PS5 (base model) — 667 GB usable of the advertised 825 GB.
  • Xbox Series X — 802 GB usable of 1 TB.
  • Xbox Series S (512 GB) — 364 GB usable. This is the console to worry about.

If you capture footage to the internal drive, that 364 GB on a Series S gets tight fast. Clear it before November 12, and check our GTA 6 recording settings guide for what console capture actually writes per minute versus a capture card.

How long the GTA 6 download will take

This is the real reason the preload window is a week long rather than a day. Using a 130 GB working estimate — roughly 1,040 gigabits — here is the arithmetic at full line rate:

Connection130 GB at full speedRealistic window
25 Mbps~11 h 30 mStart on November 12, finish on the 13th
50 Mbps~5 h 50 mOne overnight
100 Mbps~2 h 55 mOne evening
300 Mbps~58 mSame sitting
1 Gbps~17 mLimited by the store, not your line

Treat those as floors, not forecasts. Console downloads rarely hit full line rate, both stores throttle hard on a launch of this size, and a console in rest mode often downloads slower than one left awake on the dashboard. If you are on anything under 50 Mbps, start the download on November 12 itself rather than the weekend before launch — and if you share the connection, say so to whoever else is in the house before launch night, not during it.

GTA 6 unlock times by region (store data, not an announcement)

Rockstar has not published an unlock schedule. What exists is PlayStation Store availability data, compiled by fans, showing roughly 15 unlock windows spread over about 19 hours — from 11:00 UTC on November 18 to 06:00 UTC on November 19. Store times can change, and no Xbox schedule has been published at all.

The windows that matter (unconfirmed — store-derived)

  • First in the world: New Zealand, 11:00 UTC on November 18.
  • UK, Ireland, Portugal, Iceland: 00:00 UTC on November 19.
  • US and Canada: 05:00 UTC on November 19 — midnight Eastern on the 19th, 9:00 p.m. Pacific on the 18th.
  • Last to unlock: Mexico and Central America, 06:00 UTC on November 19.

Unlocks land at midnight in each region’s primary time zone, not at your local midnight — which is why Pacific players get it the evening before.

For a US creator, the planning takeaway is simple: your first recording session starts late on November 18 Pacific or just after midnight Eastern on the 19th. Schedule sleep around that, not around a 9 a.m. release. And skip the Xbox region-switch trick — it is unsanctioned, and it does not work on PS5 at all.

There is no disc — the boxed copy downloads too

The physical Standard Edition of GTA 6 does not contain a playable disc. It contains a download code. That has two consequences worth knowing before you buy:

  • You still need the full install on internal storage, whichever version you bought.
  • Once the code is redeemed to your account, the same November 12 preload window applies.

The $79.99 Standard Edition is the only boxed version; the $99.99 Ultimate Edition is digital only. Which one makes sense for a creator — and what each one actually bundles — is broken down in our GTA 6 pre-order guide. And if you are waiting on a desktop build, there is still no GTA 6 PC release date, so the November 12 preload is console-only.

Preload day is your channel deadline, not launch day

Here is the part most creators get backwards. Search interest in GTA 6 does not start on November 19 — it climbs through preload week, because that is when millions of people open their console, start a download, and go looking for something to watch while they wait.

Those viewers land on your channel page from a preload or countdown video. If the banner is a placeholder and your thumbnails do not match each other, they leave. So the honest deadline for a finished channel identity is November 12, not November 19 — and from October 26 that is 17 days.

1 2 3 4 Oct 26 — now 17 days to preload. Banner, logo, watermark in production Nov 12 Preload opens. The channel page has to look finished Nov 18–19 Regional unlock. Capture tested, thumbnails pre-made Nov 19–25 Launch week. Publish daily from a template, not from scratch

The GTA 6 preload on November 12 is the real deadline for a launch-ready channel — not November 19.

Work backwards from node 2. A custom banner and logo take a few days of back-and-forth to get right, which means commissioning in the first week of November is already cutting it close. If you are starting from nothing, the YouTube channel branding checklist lists all 12 assets with sizes and file limits so nothing gets forgotten at the last minute.

Get your channel identity finished before November 12

Preload week sends more new visitors to a small GTA 6 channel than any week before launch. The Ultimate — Full Channel Identity ($199) package covers the whole set in one pass: banner, logo, watermark, thumbnail system and the matching social exports, built on a 2560 x 1440 canvas with your name kept inside the 1235 x 338 all-device safe area so it never gets cropped on a phone.

Just need the essentials in time? Creator — Banner + Logo + Watermark ($79) covers the three assets a visitor actually sees, and Starter — YouTube Banner ($45) fixes the single worst first impression on a channel page.

A matching identity set is what makes preload-week visitors read a two-month-old channel as established.

Do this before November 12

  • Free the storage. Clear at least 150 GB. On a 512 GB Series S, that may mean uninstalling two games.
  • Check your plan and your drive. A 130 GB download on a slow connection takes most of a day — which is exactly why the week-long window exists.
  • Finish the identity. Banner at 2560 x 1440 (under 6 MB), profile picture 800 x 800, watermark a 150 x 150 transparent PNG.
  • Build the thumbnail template once. 1280 x 720, under 2 MB, with text that still reads in a ~320 px phone preview.
  • Order the channel page. Our GTA 6 YouTube channel layout guide covers the section order that converts a first-time visitor.
  • Record a test clip. Capture one minute, export it, and watch it on a phone before launch night — not after.
  • Publish two preload videos. A storage-and-timing explainer and a countdown. Both are being searched right now.

Don’t do this

  • Don’t state a file size as fact. A thumbnail reading “GTA 6 IS 200GB” ages into a correction video within hours of launch.
  • Don’t promise early gameplay. Preload is not early access, and a bait title costs you the subscriber you just earned.
  • Don’t use Rockstar’s logo or press art on your banner or thumbnails. Build the Vice City mood with your own type and colour instead.
  • Don’t rebrand on November 18. A half-finished banner on the biggest traffic night of the year is worse than an old one.

FAQ

When does GTA 6 preload start?

Rockstar has confirmed that GTA 6 preload begins on November 12, 2026, one week before the November 19 release on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. It is open to digital pre-orders, and no clock time has been announced. Preloading does not give you early access to play.

How big is the GTA 6 download?

Rockstar has not announced an install size for GTA 6. The PlayStation listing shows no storage figure and the Xbox listing still carries a placeholder. For comparison, GTA V Enhanced is about 86.8 GB on PS5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 lists a 105 GB minimum, so credible estimates sit above those.

What time does GTA 6 unlock in the US?

Rockstar has not published an unlock schedule. PlayStation Store availability data points to the US and Canada unlocking at 05:00 UTC on November 19, which is midnight Eastern on November 19 and 9:00 p.m. Pacific on November 18. Store times can change before release, so treat it as unconfirmed.

Can you preload GTA 6 with a physical copy?

Yes. The boxed Standard Edition of GTA 6 contains a download code rather than a disc, so physical buyers redeem the code and download the full game exactly like digital buyers. That means the same November 12 preload window applies once the code is on your account.
